Lead Actuary (Engineering & Aviation)

About the role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual to join our Actuarial Portfolio Management (APM) unit as the Lead Actuary for Engineering and Aviation. You will be reporting to the APM Head of Property & Specialty (P&S) and will be part of the APM P&S leadership group with other senior actuaries in P&S.

The successful candidate will lead a team of actuaries situated in our central European locations and Bangalore. You and your team are primarily responsible for maintaining actuarial pricing models and developing portfolio management strategies for Engineering and Aviation underwriting portfolios, which are key portfolios for Swiss Re Corporate Solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

• Team management and APM P&S leadership: Manage a diverse team of actuaries and portfolio experts, providing mentorship, guidance, and performance feedback. As a member of the APM P&S leadership team, you shall actively contribute to the leadership, stakeholder management, and future strategy of P&S portfolios.

• Pricing model development: Lead the development and calibration of pricing models and parameters corresponding to Engineering and Aviation products to accurately reflect the latest experience, portfolio mix, Terms & Conditions, and trends. Work with our technology teams to implement these models and parameters in underwriting tools to aid decision making.

• Strategy development: Collaborate with underwriting leadership and product teams of Engineering and Aviation portfolios to support strategy development and execution of underwriting strategies. Partner with portfolio leaders to monitor and evaluate existing and new opportunities efficiently to support both growth and remediation activities.

• Portfolio management discipline: Drive portfolio management discipline across Engineering and Aviation portfolios, ensuring that portfolios have a long-term strategy, detailed business plan, monitoring framework, and capability that responds to the execution of actions, pricing data, market trends, and competitor behavior.

• Analytics driven decision making: Develop your own view on portfolio profitability reflecting the latest market dynamics, premium rate, and loss experience. You will develop initiatives to understand the drivers of profitability using actuarial segmentation analysis and work with underwriting leaders to turn quantitative intelligence into business strategies.

About You

You are likely to be an Actuary with deep Commercial Insurance experience, ideally in Engineering and/or Aviation lines of business, bringing a combination of industry knowledge, business insight, and actuarial technical skills. People leadership is a significant part of the role; therefore, prior exposure or inclination towards it is crucial as you will be leading an international team of actuaries.

Thought leadership is essential; you can lead initiatives to take our vision to reality and advocate for driving change. You are comfortable with data and analytical management techniques and have strong actuarial technical capability; you can create solutions yourself and lead and coach others to do so.

Business fluency in English is required since the actuarial team and underwriting teams are spread across the globe using English as the primary language of communication. Proficiency in other languages is welcome but not a must.

You communicate clearly and simply, even when dealing with complicated problems and ideas, both orally and in writing. When interacting with colleagues of every level of seniority and experience, you are empathetic and sensitive, adjusting your communication style to meet the needs of others. You build broad networks of colleagues with strong interpersonal relationships.
