Markel is seeking an experienced actuary to lead our Global Reinsurance Reserving team. The main responsibility of this role will be oversight of the Global Reinsurance reserving function and management of the actuarial team. Additionally, this role will require collaboration with the Global Reinsurance Pricing team to provide portfolio-level insights to inform and supplement the rating. We are looking for a credentialed Actuary with Reinsurance expertise, previous leadership experience, and strong communication skills.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead and inspire a team of actuaries responsible for reserving work for Global Reinsurance.
  • Provide oversight and guidance over the reserving function, including internal and external reporting, ensuring accuracy of booked results, and finding ways to build further efficiencies into existing processes.
  • Coordinate with members of the International actuarial team for reserving responsibilities that cross between actuarial functional areas.
  • Ensure the Actuarial team is highly skilled and well-versed in the products they support.
  • Provide additional support and insight to the Global Reinsurance Pricing team to accurately assess and manage profitability across the portfolio.
  • Build close relationships with key stakeholders (Underwriting, Finance, etc.) to foster mutual understanding of how business developments impact actuarial drivers, and vice-versa.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends and maintain a strong network within the actuarial profession and insurance market.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for Assumed Reinsurance within the Markel actuarial department.
  • Occasionally work with various teams on other assumed reinsurance products through corporate initiatives or through Markel’s ILS division.
  • Deliver actuarial results and insights to non-actuaries in a clear and concise manner.
