Lead Actuary

The Opportunity:

In this role you will proactively provide actuarial services within commercial lines reserving by demonstrating full technical competence in a variety of actuarial/statistical concepts, practices and procedures.

You will take the lead in defining project scope, key issues, timeframes, and analytical approaches and priorities with a large degree of creativity and self-direction.

Location: New York City (55 Water Street, NYC), Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, or Chicago, Illinois highly preferred.

  • Work Arrangement: This role is preferably a hybrid role, where you will be expected to be in the office 2-3 days per week. However, for the right candidate, fully remote is a possibility.
  • The starting salary: This role is between $120,000.00 and $225,000.00.

Your New Role:

• Focus primarily on reserving for commercial lines.

• Leverage technology in new and innovative ways and effectively communicate issues while recognizing and proposing solutions to current analyses.

• Identify new opportunities for actuarial analysis within the practice area and work with others as necessary to develop analyses.

• Meet actuarial standards by ensuring all conclusions and recommendations are fully supported by analytical results and that all appropriate work products are peer reviewed.

• Present analyses that are clear, well organized, and aimed at appropriate audiences while anticipating questions and directing attention to critical assumptions and findings.

• Partner with non-actuaries outside of the department to solve large strategic business issues.

• Guide decision-making by researching new business and analyzing data to advise senior level actuaries and other departments on profitable business opportunities.

• Engage in recruitment activities and encourage others to develop relevant technical, business, and social skills.

• Support the department by taking personal accountability and responsibility for accomplishing tasks, while continuously willing to go beyond what is required.

• Learn from past experiences and seek guidance from more senior actuaries.

• Independently seek out opportunities for further development and enrichment.

• Manage budgeted resources by anticipating expenditures and properly accounting for expenses.

• Contribute to a positive work environment by demonstrating cultural expectations and influencing others to value accountability, diversity and inclusion, flexibility, continuous improvement, collaboration, creativity, and fun.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

• 5+ years relevant experience.

Preferred Experience/Certifications:

• 5+ years of experience in the property and casualty actuarial field.

• Experience with actuarial analyses or predictive modeling in the area of responsibility.

• Increasing levels of responsibility.

• 5+ casualty actuarial exams.

Preferred Education Specifics:

• Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Economics, or other quantitative field.

Preferred Competencies/Skills:

• Utilize actuarial techniques to analyze data.

• Use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions.

• Identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options.

• Apply business and financial acumen.

• Influence the team to adopt recommendations.

• Clearly and confidently convey information to a wide audience.

Preferred Knowledge:

• Advanced working knowledge of current and possible future policies, practices, trends, technology, and information affecting the business.

• Advanced working knowledge of computer systems and software such as Excel, ResQ, SAS, Python, PowerBI, etc.

• Advanced working knowledge of complex actuarial techniques and best practices.

Compensation Package:

The salary range for this role is provided above. The salary offer will be decided based on the role's complexity, its location, and the candidate’s professional background, including their education and experience.

Beyond the base salary, regular full-time and part-time employees will also be eligible for QBE’s annual discretionary bonus plan based on business and individual performance.
